My daughter has recently been asking about getting her upper lip waxed. She is 14, I don't think she needs it and I'm worried it will make the hair regrowth worse. When you come into your teens, your body is basically bombarded with hormones very quickly, which leads to the growth of more hair and darker hair.

Sometimes it isn't as noticeable as many think, but going from none to some can greatly affect self-esteem.

You actually do not need to worry, as waxing or removing darker or thicker facial hair does not make more hair grow, or make hairthicker, as the myth leads people to believe.

When I say darker or thicker, I'm making the distinction between superfluous and vellus hair. To get nerdie for a moment, superfluous hair is the terminology for thedarker, coarser hair we develop as we get older.Vellus hair is the dusting of light-coloured, fluffy hair we all have all over us.

So long as her upper lip hair is darker or coarser than the fluffy hair on her cheeks, waxing will not affect the growth or thickness of the hair.

It may look slightly stubbly as it grows between waxing, but if your daughter understands this, I'dactually recommend upper lipwaxing, so long as it is done by aprofessional waxer. Over time, many find that waxing causes their hair to thin and become less noticeable.
